Title: Transforming Data Center Networks for the Clouds

Abstract: Enterprise and campus networks have become increasingly
challenging to manage.  Driven by the trend which is popularly
referred to as the consumerization of IT, users now use a diversity of
personal devices in enterprise settings with a large set of
applications with very different requirements.  In such environments,
it is difficult to maintain user-specific secure and differentiated
access to network resources, not only at the edge of the network but
also inside the network.  Traditional network management tools are too
static and inflexible in these environments.  Controller-based
Software Defined Networking (SDN) paradigms are gaining popularity
because of their promise to reduce the complexity of managing networks
by automating the complex process of translating policy definitions to
network provisioning and dynamic control.  Though this approach
provides fine grained control over end-to-end network flows, they lack
mature management and control tools.  In this talk, we discuss an
integrated network management and control system framework that
combines legacy network management functions such as discovery, fault
detection with the end-to-end flow provisioning and control enabled by
SDN.  We believe that such hybrid control will be key for incremental
deployment of SDN functionality on today's networks.  We demonstrate
how we can dynamically control and appropriately provision per-user
and per-application access to network resources driven by application
requirements as opposed to static policies applied at the edge of the

Puneet Sharma is a Principal Research Scientist at HP Labs where he
conducts research on Data Center Networks, Cloud Architectures,
Network Monitoring and Mobility. Prior to joining the HP Labs, he
received his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Southern
California. He also holds a B.Tech. in Computer Science and
Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi. His work
on Mobile Collaborative Communities was featured in the New Scientist

He has participated in various standardization efforts. He contributed
to the UPnP's QoS Working Group efforts as co-author for QoSv3
standards. Earlier, he had co-authored the IETF standards' RFCs on the
multicast routing protocol PIM. Puneet was TPC Chair for IEEE Cloud
Networking 2013, Chaired Networking for Sustainability and Energy
Efficiency (NSRE) Track of IEEE ICCCN 2012 and Co-Chaired the 13th
IEEE LANMAN Workshop in April 2004.

Puneet is a Fellow of the IEEE and Distinguished Scientist of the ACM.
