Sitting in on a class
Several people have asked me about the idea of
sitting in on a class without being registered.
(Sitting in on a class is different, of course, from
being registered for non-graded audit credit.)
People who want to sit in on one of my classes without
being enrolled in any way for the course must agree to
all of the following:
- No one may sit in on a class if the classroom is too
crowded. I.e. there must be some empty seats in the classroom
after enrolled students have taken their places; often the classrooms in
which CS classes meet are filled to capacity.
- People who are sitting in on a class should sit in
the back of the classroom, leaving room for enrolled students near
the blackboard and display screens.
- People who are sitting in on a class should not ask
questions. They should not participate in any class discussions or
activities.
- People who are sitting in on a class may not turn in
programming exercises. They may not take the tests.
They may not participate in any other class requirements
or projects.
- People who are sitting in on a class may not be involved
in any team or group exercise, assignment, or project.
- People who are sitting in on a class will not receive
printed copies of class handouts.
- People who are sitting in on a class will receive no
email services, responses, or notifications.
- People who are
sitting in on a class will receive no out-of-class assistance
from the instructor or teaching assistants assigned to the course.
- People who are sitting in on a class may not use
the CS department lab facilities, which are
reserved for students currently enrolled in CS courses.
- No one who sits in on a class will receive any kind of
written or verbal certification of participation in the class.
No one who sits in on a class will be relieved of any relevant
responsibility to satisfy prerequisites for other classes that may
involve completion of that class.
Please let me know if you have any questions about this matter.
