CSCI 305 - Software for Global Use - Spring 2003
Course requirements
The categories of graded activities are listed below. There will be no
extra-credit exercises, tests, homework, or assignments for any individual student.
There will be no extra credit available for anyone at the end of the semester.
Note: If any students who are not CS or MIS majors wish to take this class,
semester requirements may be adjusted for them. Details of all students'
semester requirements will be determined at the beginning of the semester
(by the end of the second week of classes)
to avoid any misunderstandings later on.
Tests: 45% of semester grade
There will be two hour-tests. The first will be near the middle
of the semester, the second will be near the end of the semester.
Each of these tests will cover all material covered during that
portion of the semester, including exercises, assigned readings,
etc. See the schedule page
for dates for these tests.
There will also be a comprehensive final exam, at the regularly
scheduled time during the exam week. The exam will be optional.
If you take the final exam, your grade on the exam can replace
earlier test grade(s). The final exam grade cannot be used
to replace any other grade component.
Exercises: 25% of semester grade
There will be numerous homework and class exercises. Most of these
exercises will involve informal class presentations. The exercises
must be turned in on the specified due date; exercises may not be
turned in late in the semester in batch mode. Instructions for each
exercise will be posted on the web and discussed in class.
Depending on the number of exercises, there may be several drop
grades.
Participation: 10% of semester grade
Attend class regularly and participate in class discussions
for this portion of your semester grade.
Semester project and presentation: 20% of semester grade
Each student will design and implement a semester project,
involving some extra reading/research and/or programming.
The project will be an individual effort, with the honor code in effect.
Each student will be required to make a class presentation concerning his/her project. The
schedule for these presentations will be determined later.
Semester grade categories:
A: 90%-100%; B: 80%-89%; C: 70%-79%; D: 60%-69%; F: 59%-0%
General remarks:
1. You are responsible for being aware of what happens in class. Current announcements and
instructions provided in class take precedence over anything posted on the course web pages.
(Class announcements and instructions will be posted on the web as promptly as possible.)
2. You are also responsible for being aware of information that is posted on the course web pages.
Check the class web pages for current news, announcements, exercises, etc.
Almost all class web pages will have a "last update" date/time stamp at the top of the page.
3. Unless you request and arrange otherwise, you are responsible for paying
attention to email communication concerning the course that may be sent to
your University of Mississippi address. If you do not have a UM email address,
you should go to the computer center Help Desk (downstairs in Weir Hall) immediately to arrange to activate yours.
4. Keep copies of all homework exercises which you turn in. All materials
which are turned in may be retained for future reference. Keep all graded materials which
are returned to you. Keep backup copies of all email submissions that you send. Keep at least
one backup copy of the programs that you turn in. Better still, keep at least two backup copies
of the programs that you turn in.
5. Makeup tests will be available only in cases of documented emergencies or
official excuses absences.
6. The final examination will be given during the exam period at the end of the term
(see schedule sheet). It will not be available earlier.
7. All graded assignments for this course fall under the provisions of university, school, and
department Honor Code policies. All graded assignments should represent your individual,
original effort; no assignments will involve team or group work.
8. Exercises will be due at specified times,
which will be posted on the web and announced in class.
Turn in each exercise on the due date in order to receive full grade credit.
