Computer Science Seminar Series

The Python Programming Language

Friday, April 8th, 3:00pm

Weir Hall, Room 235

Presenter: Sean Smith

Python is an interpreted, interactive, object-oriented programming language, similar to Perl. It has interfaces to many system calls and libraries, as well as to various window systems, and is extensible in C, C++, and has been implemented in Java as Jython. Originally designed by Guido van Rossum, with the syntax from Modula-3, as a language to be generally extensible and to make system administration easier than using C.

This seminar will give a brief walk through of the data structures and syntax of Python and will also demonstrate common uses of its scripting capabilities. Python is best known for its string processing capabilities, so I will demonstrate the ease of these built in libraries and functions. I will also show how Jython can be used to take advantage of the plethora of Java libraries and functionality.
