Computer Science Seminar Series
Open Office and Dynamic Document Creation
Friday, February 25th, 3:00pm
Weir Hall, Room 235
Presenter: Dr. P. Tobin Maginnis
Associate Professor, Computer and Information Science
Open Office (OO) is a Free Open Source Software (FOSS) replacement for
the Microsoft Office suite. Like MS Office, OO has spreadsheet,
presentation, drawing, or graphing capabilities; However, this
presentation will focus on OO Writer.
OO Writer has two basic components: its built-in GUI functions and
custom macro (OO Basic) integrated programming environment (IDE). We
begin with a brief overview of selected built-in functions which
include: styles, frames, headers, footers, and footnotes. Example
documents using these functions will be displayed. Next, a description
of built-in controls, fields, and field types will be reviewed.
Second, we will then enter the OO Basic visual IDE and review its
features, go over example routines, dialogs, control flow, and calls
to OO objects. We then demonstrate a series of documents which use
these programmed services to provide dynamic content to the user.
