Department Needs List
Alumni and friends can assist the Department in many ways. They can
promote the Department among prospective students. They can help
place students in internships or new graduates in jobs. And, in these
times of lagging State support for higher education, alumni and
friends can assist the Department in the challenging task of
maintaining up-to-date hardware and software to support its
instructional and research programs.
The Department has identified the following items for purchase when
appropriate funding becomes available. If you would like to help the
Department to acquire any of these items, please let us know. You can
contact Advancement Associate Stephen Snead at ssnead@olemiss.edu or
662-915-6967 or contact Department Chair Conrad Cunningham at
chair@cs.olemiss.edu or 662-915-7396.
- Furniture - $60,000
Throughout its existence, the Department has tended to use its limited
equipment funds for computers and items for student laboratories. As
a result, much of its furniture is nearing (or beyond) the end of its
useful life. Many of the items in use are items that were discarded
by other departments on campus. Thus it will be necessary to reequip
our public areas, offices, and research labs with furniture in the
next few years.
- Backup Windows Server - $3500
The Department's network currently includes approximately 70 Windows
computers with one server to control the domain and provide shared
files. The Department needs a backup server to provide more robust
operations.
- Ethernet Testing Equipment - $300
The Department does not currently have any equipment for ethernet
testing. It needs some good equipment to be able to test ports and
cables.
- 802.11g Upgrade for Cisco WAPs - $1200
The Department installed a wireless network in 2003 that included six
Cisco access points with 802.11a and 802.11b services. (802.11g
access points were not available at the time of installation.) The
plan was to upgrade the 802.11b access points to the higher bandwidth
802.11g access points. The Department and several of our students
already own several wireless cards capable of using 802.11g.
- Systems and Networking Lab - 10 @ $1300 each
The Department currently has approximately 25 computers running
Windows and Linux in our Systems and Networking lab. However, most of
them are relatively old. They are also quite dissimilar. Because of the
way the Department manages its Windows machines, this dissimilarity is
very inconvenient.
- Document Cameras - 3 @ $3000 each
The Department currently has one document camera in a classroom. It
plans to add document cameras in its second classroom and both Adler
labs.
- Color Laser Printer - $1300-$3800
The Department's printing of color materials is increasing in volume.
The current color printing facilities consist of an obselete color
laser printer and inkjet printers, all of which are slow and expensive
to operate. A modern color laser printer would improve the quality of
the printed materials and reduce the amount of money spent on
supplies.
- Linux Servers - 2 @ $3500 each
The Department currently has three UNIX/Linux servers that are used
for research and instructional purposes. At least two of these need to
be replaced soon.
- Lab Laser Printers - 3 @ $2000 each
The Department maintains three labs to support its instructional
program. All three have high-capacity, networked printers. The
reliability of these printers has decreased. They will need to be
replaced soon (or when they break, which could be any day).
- Graphics/Visualization/Multimedia Lab - 3 @ $6000 each
The Department does not currently have any high-performance graphics
computers. To support planned instructional and research efforts in
graphics and visualization, the Department needs to set up a lab of at
least three computers.
- Computational Grid Computers - 6 @ $3500 each
The Department wishes to set up a "grid" multicomputer to support its
instructional and research program in distributed computing,
bioinformatics, and scientific computation.
