Department of Computer and Information Science

Welcome!

The faculty and staff of the Department of Computer and Information Science at the University of Mississippi are glad that you have taken the time to visit our web site. We have exciting and innovative undergraduate and graduate programs offered on the scenic and beautiful campus of the University of Mississippi in historic Oxford, Mississippi. Surrounded by beautiful tree-lined horizons and nestled in a valley in North Mississippi we are breaking new ground in computer science education and research.

We have recently returned to our newly renovated home in Weir Hall and we are excited about the new feel to our building. We share the building with the University's new Galtney Center for Academic Computing. We have technologically advanced classrooms dedicated to our program. We also have two computer laboratories made possible by the Department's one million dollar endowment established by John Adler. Recently we purchased thirty new computers to enhance the teaching and learning capabilities and teaching capabilities within our laboratories.

The Department of Computer and Information Science offers four degrees in the field:

  • Through the School of Engineering, we offer a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BSCS) degree. This is an ABET-accredited professional degree in computer science.
  • Through the College of Liberal Arts, we offer a major in computer science within the Bachelor of the Arts (BA) degree program.
  • Through the School of Engineering, we offer a specialization in computer science within the Master of Science (MS) program in engineering science.
  • Through the School of Engineering, we offer a specialization in computer science within the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in engineering science.

Each of our undergraduate degree programs is intense, but the reward upon graduation is significant. Computer Science graduates enter the workforce with a strong background in computer science and are, hence, highly competitive for good jobs. The graduates of our program can expect to earn $40,000 to $60,000 in their first year following graduation.

Our M.S. students and PhD students receive valuable experience within our research fields and also leave highly competent and able to compete effectively in the job market. Some of the recent employers of our graduates are Acxiom Corporation, International Paper, Wal-Mart Information Systems and Federal Express. Several universities and junior colleges have taken advantage of our superior graduates to teach in their fields of study.

The Department has a growing research program. Research areas include software architecture and engineering, programming methodologies, artificial intelligence, machine learning, bioinformatics, distributed systems, open source software, and educational applications of computing. The affiliated Center for Geospatial Workforce Development has a goal of creating fifty online courses on remote sensing and its applications. As we add new faculty members our research areas will extend to new areas.

Again, allow us to thank you for visiting our web site and encourage you to call and arrange a visit to the University. We are available to answer questions you may have about our programs via phone or e-mail. Please feel free to contact us at any time. The phone number is (662) 915-7396 or write us via e-mail at secretary@cs.olemiss.edu.

As always, Go Rebels!
